- Our Core Competency is Web Hosting. If you own a domain you need a place to put the site so that when people go to see it or send email to it everything works. This is what we do.
Features - We offer a certain amount of space for you to put your website. That could be any where from 100 Megabytes on up. There are also other things that come with your website:
Throughput - This is a measure of how much is being uploaded and downloaded from your site, total, per month. Usually this will not be a problem for new sites since not many people know about them yet, but if you have a busy site and you want to transfer it to us you should find out from your current host how much throughput (bandwidth) you are using now. Once you have an account with us you can see how much you have used so far on your Control Panel (see
CPanel).
CPanel - To make it easier for you to make your site work we have installed CPanel software. This is the best one we’ve found so far. You get to this web page by going to www.yourdomain.com/cpanel or www.yourwebsite.com:2082 with your web browser. It will prompt you for the username and password you received in your welcome email. Once your in it’s pretty easy to use from there, but if you are still having difficulties click on the link at the bottom left that says DocumentationClick to View and it will open a page with help files.
eMail - You can manage your eMail from your CPanel (see
CPanel). To access your Web Mail you can go to www.yourdomain.com/webmail or www.yourdomain.com:2095. This will then prompt you for your username, which is your full eMail address (you@yourdomain.com), and your password, which you setup in CPanel under mail.
If you haven’t setup any mail accounts or you will only have one email your username is the same as your CPanel username and the password is also the same as your CPanel password.
POP3 - If you want to use an eMail client (Outlook, OE, Eudora, etc.) to check your eMail you will need this information: Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.yourdomain.com; Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com; Username: youremail@yourdomain.com or your CPanel username; Password: The one you setup in CPanel or your CPanel password.
Catchall - If you want to use an eMail client (Outlook, OE, Eudora, etc.) to check your eMail you will need this information: Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.yourdomain.com; Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com; Username: youremail@yourdomain.com or your CPanel username; Password: The one you setup in CPanel or your CPanel password.
Scripts - What are scripts? They are premade pieces of websites that you can add on to your own. For example we offer Image Magick, which is an image/gallery management script (in PHP). You can install this on your domain (preferably in a subfolder) and put a link to it on your page. When people click on the link they will see the gallery, which is already made, and the only thing you need to do is upload the pictures. Well, it’s a little more complicated than that, but Image Magick has a great tutorial on how to use it. The best part is it’s free. You can see a list of our scripts
here.
FTP - This is how you upload your site. You can use many methods to do this. You can download an FTP client program, use the web based FTP from your CPanel (is there anything it doesn’t do?), or you can use Internet Explorer. If you haven’t done this before we suggest starting with Internet Explorer. You would type ftp://www.yourdomain.com or ftp.yourdomain.com into the browser to open the FTP. It will then open a warning telling you about some of the rules and settings of the server. Click OK to close that. Then from the File menu at the top click on Login As… and type in your username and password you setup in CPanel or your CPanel username & password if you have not. Then you will see a list of folders on your website. People can only see the files in the public_htm folder so put your website there. You can do this either by using Copy & Paste or Drag & Drop with your mouse.
FrontPage - You need to make sure that FrontPage extensions are installed on your site. You can find this out from your CPanel by clicking on the FrontPage Extensions link. To use them you need to have your ftp info (see
FTP) use ftp.yourdomain.com to upload to. If you need help refer to the help provided by
Microsoft.
DNS (Move your site to us) - This is the most difficult part for most people to understand about Web Hosting. We’ll break it down real simple so even we can understand it. We need to explain a few things first:
Everything on the Internet has an IP address. It’s how the computers know where things are. Web Pages have IPs, your computer when it connects to the Internet has an IP, and everything on the Internet has an IP.
When your computer logs onto the Internet it connects to a DNS server. When you type a web page into your browser, www.telavir.com for example, your computer asks the DNS server where this site is and the DNS server usually responds with an IP address saying it’s there and then your computer asks whatever is at that IP address for the website called www.telavir.com. That being said now we can get to how your site works.
When you register your domain your Domain Registrar will assign 2 DNS servers (possibly more) to your domain. These servers are where your site is at until you change them by making a request to your registrar or login to your account with them and make the change yourself. So when you type your domain into your browser your computer will be sent to these 2 DNS servers to find your domain.
Your DNS - For you to host your site with us you need to contact your registrar (or login to your account there) and change your DNS servers to ns1.telavir.com & ns2.telavir.com. After you make this change it can take up to 72 hours (possibly more) for the rest of the DNS servers to notice the change. Also if you’ve been to your site before your computer might still "remember" the old location of your site until you clear out your browser’s history. So if you don’t see our default page right away you will have a good idea why. Once you can see the default page you can upload your site (see
FTP).
- If you have an account with us we sent you information on how to access the client area. To get there click on the Login link on the main page and you’ll be brought to the
. Once you’ve logged in you can view your past billing, current invoices, your billing information, and create trouble tickets.
- You can register domains by going to our domain registration website. Click on the
Transfers - You can transfer your domain to our registration service for a really great price and it adds 1 year to your current registration. Try us. Totransfer a .com, .net, or .info domain name you will need to make a request to our registration service to transfer your domain. We will then send you a confirmation eMail to make sure you want to transfer the domain to us. Then we send a request to your registrar to transfer your domain to us. Your registrar will send you a confirmation eMail to make sure you want to transfer the domain away from them. Once this is answered your domain should transfer to us within the next 72 hours.
Transferring .org & .biz domains are almost the same as above except you need to obtain a transfer code from your current registrar to enter into our transfer form. This code has also been called a transfer secret, secret code, passcode, and anything else registrars can do to make it confusing enough so you won’t transfer your domains to someone else.
TLDs - Remember DNS servers (see DNS)? What if they don’t know where www.telavir.com is (it is a BIG internet)? Well, then it looks at the domain name to find out what the root of it is. Let’s break a domain name down shall we?
Subdomain | Domain | Root or TLD
www . yourdomain . com
So your DNS server would go to ask the Root Server for the .com root where is www.telavir.com? And it would answer because it knows where all the .com domains are. When you register a domain you have a lot of options now check them out: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, & .name are all available to anyone. Others generic Top Level Domains (TLD) include .aero, .coop, .museum, & .pro and they have some restrictions placed on them.
2 letter TLDs (.tv, .ws, .cc, etc.) are assigned to countries and they have the right to resell them to whomever they want. Some examples are United States (.us), Canada (.ca), Tuvalu (.tv), Western Samoa (.ws), Cocos Islands (.cc), and even England (.uk). For a complete list
